Our priority here at Wilbur’s is to make sure that our community is safe and protected. And to that end, we wanted to share some information about the Moody Landfill Fire that we’ve gathered.
In case you weren’t aware, Governor Ivey has issued a state of emergency and called in the EPA to help our local leaders extinguish Moody’s landfill fire. The fire, that has been burning since January, has severely impacted the health and safety of Trussville, Moody, and surrounding communities.
The smoke from the Moody landfill fire has been affecting thousands of residents in Trussville, Argo, and as far away as Birmingham and beyond. With so many questions regarding what is in the smoke, we urge residents nearby to take steps to ensure the health and safety of their families.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
The EPA recommends taking the following steps:
- If you have respiratory problems such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or emphysema, stay indoors when you see or smell smoke.
- Reduce your outdoor activities, and do them more slowly, when you see or smell smoke.
- Close the doors and windows of your house to keep smoke from getting inside.
- Talk to your health care provider if you have respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, or emphysema, and you think your condition may get worse when you breathe smoke.
You depend on your heating and cooling system to filter out microbes and other airborne contaminants. But your HVAC system can also be outfitted with several different Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) products to purify and sanitize the air you breathe at home.
To ensure you have the right filter or IAQ product for your system, or to evaluate the air quality inside your home, make sure to contact an HVAC company you trust.
